FiiO FT5, the beginning of a new era

The FiiO FT5 are the firm's first planar-magnetic headphones. They arrive to lead the range of open headphones with an ultra-thin diaphragm structure and 90mm driver, composed of 20 magnets whose objective is to achieve a unique sound result.

Its high sensitivity allows total performance with Hi-Res players and quality amplifiers/DACs, which together with its 392-wire high-purity cable, provide the set with maximum performance. In addition, these FiiO FT5 come with two different types of pads and four types of connectors to personalize listening to your liking.

With all this, FiiO's new planar-magnetic open headphones constitute a new standard in the universe of the most advanced portable audio.

Technology at the highest level

Magneto-planar or planar-magnetic drivers are located between dynamic and electrostatic headphones. In this case, the diaphragm is a special type of thin film, micrometer level and processed by 28nm chip-sclae, for a driver approximately 6um thick.

These features of the planar transducer allow us to create headphones that not only offer a great level of detail, but are also easy to power. The FT5 is FiiO's first set of planar magnetic headphones to deliver intense energy to the sound.

90mm oversized driver

The FiiO FT5 uses an extraordinary large 90mm planar magnetic transducer. Compared to a traditional dynamic transducer, the planar converts sound energy into sound waves in a more balanced way, vibrating in a much more uniform way. The vibrations are distributed throughout the material of the transducer diaphragm. In this way, the FiiO FT5can express audio signals realistically and accurately, faithfully reproducing every last note and truly providing you with lossless high-fidelity sound.

Ultra-thin diaphragm

When designing the FiiO FT5, the development team aimed to achieve strict sound performance goals. After extensive testing, FiiO engineers determined that a 6um thickness was the ideal balance between sound and reliability.

For the diaphragm itself, various materials were evaluated for use, such as PET, PEI and PAR, and extensive tests were performed on dynamics, conversion efficiency, reliability, resolution, etc. Based on the acoustic objective and overall evaluation, it was decided to choose PAR material for the diaphragm, which is the backbone of not only the excellent dynamics and highly detailed sound of the FT5, but also of rich bass not typically found in planar magnetic headphones.

Aluminum alloy and silver coils

In a planar transducer diaphragm with a printed coil, almost all of the weight is concentrated on the metal-coated coils. During the development of the FT5, R&D engineers not only had to consider how the coils would interact with the thin 6um diaphragm, but also the density and conductivity of the coils themselves. After examining and testing several commonly used materials for flat coils, FiiO engineers determined that the lightest material, an aluminum alloy, was the best for the coils.

Additionally, they determined that the silver metal mix would also improve the conductivity of the coils, making it easier to power the transducer without sacrificing the high-frequency detail and sonic richness characteristic of good planar magnetic transducers.

Nanoscale diaphragm coating process

The FiiO FT5 transducer coils are diaphragm printed using high-end technology from the semiconductor industry, ensuring that not only the thickness of the coils is more consistent, but the weight of the coils is distributed more evenly, resulting in a more robust diaphragm and, ultimately, a more precise sound.

20 neodymium magnets per driver

To ensure greater comfort of use, 11 magnets are placed inside the planar-magnetic driver of the FiiO FT5 and 9 magnets on the outside, resulting in 20 magnets per channel and 40 in total for the entire headset. The balanced placement of the magnets allows the aluminum alloy coils to be evenly distributed in the magnetic field. It also allows the driver diaphragm to balance between the forces of the internal and external magnets, ensuring constant driver movement and therefore reduced distortion for higher fidelity sound.

The FT5 uses N52 neodymium magnets with a magnetic density of up to 1.5T to provide the powerful forces needed to drive the large magnetic driver. These magnets are placed parallel to the transducer coils, allowing the coils to be evenly distributed across the magnetic field to maximize the driving force of the headphones and bring out the full potential of the planar magnetic transducer.

High sensitivity and ease of operation

The FiiO FT5mounts 20 neodymium magnets with a high magnetic density of up to 1.5T, the thin 6um diaphragm and nanoaluminum coating technology, the FT5 transducer is both light and resistant , which allows a high sensitive level.

  • 110dB Vrms (@1kHz)
  • 96dB mW(@1KhZ)
  • 20*1.5T
  • 6um

Lightweight magnesium-aluminum alloy construction

Aiming to balance weight and quality, the FiiO FT5 are made from a magnesium-aluminum alloy with a density of 64% to make listening sessions comfortable regardless of the duration.

In turn, these FT5 have part of their metal structure that resists much better the vibrations generated by the transducer from music - such as those generated when playing tracks with a lot of bass - than which would make it a plastic casing.

Open design and a natural scene

The FT5 also contains a specially designed open-back acoustic structure. The back of the driver case is carefully designed to act as a sound wave deflector to isolate waves on the front and back of the driver case.

The FT5's grille is scientifically designed to precisely control and accelerate airflow when the driver is on the move. This not only allows the headphones to have treble resolution unmatched by dynamic driver headphones, but also allows you to have a wide and vast soundstage to better immerse you in the symphony.

3-axis rotating structure

This FiiO FT5 also integrates theexcellent 3-axis rotary designused in other FT series headphones. This allows the earbuds to rotate freely and lock onto your head regardless of angle or size to improve quality and seal.

High purity cable and different applications

The FiiO FT5 comes with a 1.5m cable made up of 392 silver-plated crystalline copper strands, each of which has a diameter of 23 AWG. Copper cables help deliver solid, highly detailed sound, completely transmitting lossless sound.

In addition, these open headphones have four different connectors:

  • 3.5mm
  • 4.4mm
  • 3.5mm to 6.35mm adapter
  • 4.4mm to XLR-4 adapter

A personal touch with its two types of pads

The FT5 comes with 2 different types of pads:

  • Ante: balanced sound, enhanced atmosphere, superbly vigorous.
  • Protein leather: clear sound, wide soundstage, very detailed.

In addition, as with the FiiO FT3, these FT5 come with a leather case in a brown finish and a luxurious feel.
