The FiiO FF5 redesigns the concept of in-ear headphones, with a 14.2mm dynamic driver. They are presented as a rugged, extended bass headphone, based on a carbon diaphragm.
They are the first in-ear headphones with a detachable MMCX cable and an open design for a fine-tuned frequency response. Its CNC aluminum outer construction offers a modern and 100% urban look.
The FF5 is a headphone that avoids the traditions of its form factor and features a large, specially developed 14.2 mm dynamic driver that employs an innovative carbon-based diaphragm.
Specifically, the driver features a PU gasket plus a carbon-based diaphragm that allows it to be lightweight and very rigid. This results in a sound with fast transients and excellent treble resolution thanks to a driver construction that minimizes nonlinear distortion by mitigating unwanted movement.
Inspired by flower petals, the FF5 features a beautiful and functional design. FiiO's development team aimed to reduce unwanted reflections and vibrations inside the FF5's housing, leading to the development of a diffuse open design that features an acoustic damping device that allows some of the air pressure inside the earphone to diffuse outward, resulting in fewer unwanted internal reflections and standing waves for purer sound and improved bass response.
The FF5 comes standard with a silver plated monocrystalline cable. 14 wires are stranded into one small wire and 7 small wires are stranded together into one large wire, resulting in 4 large wires with a total of 392 wires. More wires significantly increase the cross-sectional area of the wires in the cable to improve transmission speed and stability.
Litz braiding reduces the skin effect, which also further aids the transmission rate by improving conductivity. Thanks to the above factors plus the excellent materials, compared to typical cables, the FF5 cable features significantly improved treble resolution allowing for a highly detailed yet nuanced sound.
We found that there are very few headsets with detachable cables, which greatly reduces the usability of those headsets if something happens to the cable. The FF5 features a detachable MMCX cable, allowing you to replace broken cables or experiment with different cables made of various materials.
In addition, the FF5's cable features interchangeable audio plugs, allowing you to freely switch between the included 3.5mm/4.4mm plugs at will to properly match your source.
With each new generation of headphones, much experimentation is done to ensure that the performance is actually at least one step ahead of the previous generation. Compared to typical in-ear monitors, more care must be taken when designing a headphone to ensure excellent sound.
After much experimentation, FiiO developed acoustic resistance tubes in the FF5 that help increase and extend bass response. When the driver diaphragm vibrates, the resulting air pressure is diverted to these acoustic resistance tubes, reducing resonance in the low end.
The FF5 was designed as a pair of headphones designed for listening to female voices, and not so much for heavy bass. Therefore, a lot of attention was paid to the frequency range and tone representation of the female voice. We specifically controlled the resonance at 127 Hz to prevent the vocals from feeling muddy and boomy, while appropriately boosting the frequency range from 2kHz-4kHz to make female vocals clearer, more transparent and prominent.
Thanks to the light weight of carbon fiber, the FF5 has excellent treble performance, allowing for overtones of vocals, guitars, cymbals, violins and other instruments.
The FF5 is made of aluminum alloy, commonly used in other high-end headphones, to reduce weight and maintain high durability. A single in-ear unit weighs only 3.4g, allowing the FF5 to simply disappear in your ear so you can fully immerse yourself in your hi-fi music.
Included with the FF5 are not only three types of sponge covers, but also molded non-slip silicone rings. The total of 6 non-slip silicone rings come in M/L sizes and provide a better seal for extended bass while maintaining high resolution in the other parts of the frequency response.
