A phono stage, also called a phono preamplifier, provides the connection between the recording cartridge/pickup (stylus) and the amplifier.
Turntable cartridges emit a very small signal. This signal needs to be amplified up to several hundred times the original size before it is strong enough for your amplifier. A phono stage increases the signal level from millivolts to volts.
When vinyl was the standard for audio recording, the phono stage was built into receivers and amplifiers, allowing direct connection of a turntable. Today, most receivers and amplifiers do not contain a phono stage, so a separate unit is needed.
It's a must for any turntable without a phono stage already built in. It will also upgrade a basic built-in phono stage in a turntable or amplifier system.

There are two types of rotating cartridges: moving magnet and moving coil – and the ZEN Air Phono works with both.
The MM configuration is for cartridges with an output voltage of 2 mV and higher.
The MC configuration for outputs less than 2 mV.
Use the gain switch on the rear to change this setting.

He usado este previo para intentar mejorar el interno de mi Yamaha As500 y nada más conectarlo, redujo el ruido al máximo, no noté mucha diferencia en la música en realidad, pero los ruidos propios del vinilo se minimizaron sin restar volumen ni calidad de sonido. El trato y la rapidez de Zococity, pues como siempre… EXCELENTE! Muchas gracias!!
